ENGLISH VERSION below (…. i translate it myself with dictionary 😉 )
Zuerst war da dies irrwitzig atemlose von „ma jolie“ vom „right now you’re in the best of hands“-Album (2003). Ein treibendes Posthardcoreriff. Ebenso plötzlich wieder raus. Cleane Gitarre.
Very impressive!
BEAR VS. SHARK habe ich leider nie live gesehen.
Die Herren haben sich 2005 nach 2 Alben aufgelöst.
Das Erste war eben „Right Now, You’re in the Best of Hands. And If Something Isn’t Quite Right, Your Doctor Will Know in a Hurry” in 2003.
Sänger Marc Paffi fasst die Attitüde sehr gut zusammen: “I don’t think there was ever a mantra behind what we were doing,” recalls Gaviglio. “I mean, we were never going to wear makeup or dress in matching outfits. … We wanted to be ourselves. We were playing because we loved to play, not because we ever thought we were cooler than anyone. Why would we think we’re better than anyone? When all we’re doing is writing songs and, frankly, rolling around in a cramped, crappy, rusty van and sleeping on other people’s floors! We did that all for the music! And, maybe it’s those Midwestern values, but we also answered every piece of fan mail. If anyone came up after a show, we’d talk with them.”

„and you always learned a lot from the deep end of faith and you worry yourself sick”.

Anspieltips:
„right now….“: Ma Jolie / MPS / Bloodgiver
“terrorhawk”: Catamaran / 5, 6 kids / Antwan / I fucked your dad

ENGLISH VERSION:
the recovery of this band must reach back to the post-napster-era. the most i loaded through emule-server world-wide and 96% of it landed in trash. but a few bands made the full 10 points and BEAR VS SHARK was one of them. i searched for an LP but in 2011 it was really hard to find one, cause they were completely sold-out.
first of all songs catches me “ma jolie”. this completely breathless and ridiculous song. this pulsive post-hardcore-riff. slap-bang cut into a clean guitar lasting for an eon. than marc’s catchy vocals. dunking into a heavy distortion guitar and overturn and screaming and singing…..
very impressive!
i was electrified! heard the next few songs and: fell in love!
i remembered REFUSED or AT THE DIRVE-In with this maximum of energy in their songs. which ATDI for example often wasted on stage. but unfortunately i missed a live show of BEAR VS SHARK. and they split in 2005.
first album was „Right Now, You’re in the Best of Hands. And If Something Isn’t Quite Right, Your Doctor Will Know in a Hurry” in 2003.
after founding the band in 2001 they make themselves up to find torpedo-like riffs with hard vocals and many melodies. on some points while listening i remembered the incredible FUGAZI but also the energy of MC5.
in the beginning of this century punkrock was eaten faster than ever through digital downloads. noone could have forseen that. everyone seems to begin to scream, to jangle, to spit out the lyrics. combinig hardcore and punk to posthardcore or emo or screamo. singer marc paffi summarise this attitude like this: “I don’t think there was ever a mantra behind what we were doing,” recalls Gaviglio. If anyone came up after a show, we’d talk with them.”
it’s all about the music. not more and not less.
in 2005 comes the second album “terrorhawk” before band split up.
when i heard it the first time, for me it was a heightening! the first tracks have had this inimitable power. the music pushes forward with a big smile! and there are those “bigger than life” songs like “baraga embankment”. it has something QUEEN-ful for me. the lyrics are about the inevitable catastrophesin life that has to happen. „and you always learned a lot from the deep end of faith and you worry yourself sick”.
starting with a clear pianoline and marc’s electrifying vocals. raise up with the lyrics, getting noiyer an louder, followed with energy and: pleasure!
the whole album oscillate between this typical energy of BEAR VS SHARK and one variety that take other bands as a unique feature for a whole album – what bores after 3 songs.
on this album are dreamy songs, math-rocking, extremely noisy parts, and fragments who don’t know where to go 😉
that IS big cinema!
the second album is much more diversified and my all-time fav!

for example:
„right now….“: Ma Jolie / MPS / Bloodgiver
“terrorhawk”: Catamaran / 5, 6 kids / Antwan / I fucked your dad
those albums have a re-release on EQUAL VISION as Double LP with new artwork from singer Marc.

here a great livesession recorded @audiotree. also on utube.
